Meet Phenopups at the Society of Toxicology annual congress in San Francisco ! 11-15 mars 2012

You can meet PhenoPups at the annual congress of the Society of Toxicology in San Francisco. Boris Matrot, scientific advisor of PhenoPups will be glad to present you a study conducted in collaboration with CiToxLAB.

PhenoPups demonstrated its expertise in conducting safety pharmacology investigations in neonates during pre- and postnatal reproductive toxicity studies. PhenoPups innovative devices allow rapid and convenient monitoring of physiological and behioural parameters in neonatal rat pups using a battery of non-invasive tests from as early as PND 1, as demonstrated by these results with CPZ.

International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium Meeting in London, December 2012

In the frame of the international effort of the IMPC for standardization of transgenic mice phenotyping, PhenoPups was present at the IMPC meeting held in London. Estelle Durand, CEO of PhenoPups, presented the following communication :

Newborn mice and rats are a suitable model for pediatric research from prematurity to adolescence: they provide suitable models for developing new therapeutic strategies for pediatric disease, in line with US and EC regulations.
However, studies in newborn mice and rats face major difficulties due to the small size of the pups and their sensory and motor immaturity. To assess their development, we have engineered a whole platform adapted to newborn and juvenile rodents.
This platform provides the early assessment of respiratory and related functions in newborn rodents. Furthermore, the consequences of early disorders of breathing on sensorimotor and cognitive development can be assessed using innovative tests well-suited to newborn rodents.

Newborn mice and rats are a suitable model for pediatric research from prematurity to adolescence: they resemble preterm human infants regarding neurodevelopmental characteristics, and mutant models of pediatric diseases are available at an increasing proportion. To study these animals early in their life is essential: i) in case of early death of the model, ii) to avoid the effect of functional recovery, iii) to understand the ontogeny of the pathology at early stages of development. They also provide suitable models for developing new therapeutic strategies for paediatric diseases, in line with US and EC regulations. However, studies in newborn mice and rats face major difficulties due to the small size of the pups and their sensory and motor immaturity…

Phenotyping of genetic animal models in the early neonatal period has become an important part of developmental studies. Unfortunately, in many strains of transgenic mice, pups die few hours after birth due to the lack of adaptation to extra-uterine life or severe respiratory failure. In these strains, physiological and therapeutic testing cannot be carried out during the period of neonatal development. We tested the ability of a prototype of negative pressure ventilator to deliver small tidal volume at a high respiratory rate, close-fitted to newborn mice ventilatory pattern. The first aim of this pilot study was to test the ability of this new ventilator to resuscitate newborn mice after a cardiorespiratory arrest artificially induced. Mouse models are increasingly used to investigate genetic contributions to developmental disorders in children. In particular, early cognitive assessment in newborn mice is critical to evaluate pediatric drug efficacy and toxicity. Unfortunately, learning procedures developed in adult rodents are not suitable for testing newborn rodents because of their motor and sensory immaturity. Furthermore, newborns have far greater capacity for learning but less capacity for memorizing.!
Therefore, developing such tests for newborn mice is a priority challenge for neurogenetics and pharmacological research.
